Welcome to Lodge Virtue & Honor
Steeped in history, Freemasonry offers so much for so many, from
charitable giving to making friends for life.

FREEMASONRY

Welcome to our website which we hope you will find both interesting and informative, whether or not you are a Freemason. Lodge Virtue & Honor is situated in South Street Axminster in East Devon, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Lodge Virtue & Honor meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month except for the summer recess from June to August.  The Lodge is administered by the Province of Devon which in turn is administered by the United Grand Lodge of England. The United Grand Lodge of England administers Lodges of Freemasons in England and Wales and in many places overseas.

As Freemasons our members are part of one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. Freemasonry teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies.

Why become a Freemason?

You want to make new friendships?

A Freemason’s Lodge provides wide-ranging opportunities for great camaraderie, socialising, having fun and making new friends.

No two Masonic Lodges are the same. All have unique personalities driven by their members. You will also have the opportunity to visit other Lodges within the local area.

Beyond the monthly meetings, a Masonic Lodge is also a place for dinners and special events.

Because it’s Worthwhile!

Freemasonry is a worthwhile way to spend some of your free time. It provides a real chance to make a positive impact in the Community and to make a real difference to the lives of people who are in need of assistance.

Because it’s a Challenge!

If you are looking to challenge yourself then Freemasonry uniquely provides many ways in which you can grow and develop both morally and intellectually. Freemasonry is all about building character and supporting members as individuals. It’s these foundations that allow members to increase self-confidence and develop transferable skills such as public speaking.

Because it’s Fascinating!

Freemasonry affords its members the chance to become part of a rich historical and cultural tradition which has existed for over 300 years. Freemasonry has become part of the social fabric of our Nation to the extent that masonic phrases such as “Past Master” and “On the Level” have become part of our everyday language. Its basic principles of Compassion, Benevolence and Integrity provide its members with a moral framework by which to live, to attain a greater knowledge of themselves, and an opportunity for personal, intellectual, and spiritual development.

From the outside, a Masonic Lodge may look rather mundane. But inside the Lodge Room itself, Freemasonry comes to life! Lodge Virtue & Honor has nearly one hundred and eighty years of local history, age-old artifacts, art, and the pageantry of our ritual that dates back even further, the story unfolds as you progress on your journey in Freemasonry.

Guiding principles of Freemasonry

For Freemasons, there are four important values that help define their path through life: Integrity, Friendship, Respect, and Charity. In today’s world filled with uncertainty, these principles ring as true now as they have at any point in the organisation’s history.

INTEGRITY

Rather than working on buildings like the masons of old, today’s Freemasons focus on building themselves as people of integrity, and membership provides the structure to help achieve that goal.

FRIENDSHIP

One of the oldest social organisations in the world, Freemasonry is not defined by an ideology. It is open to people from all religions and political persuasions and provides the common foundation for friendships between members, many of which will last for life.

RESPECT

With a membership of more than 150,000 people drawn from communities across the UK, Freemasonry brings people together irrespective of their race, religion or any other perceived differences that can divide us as a society.

SERVICE

Whether participating in events, fundraising for a charitable cause or volunteering for public or community organisations, service is at the very heart of Freemasonry. Our members make valuable contributions by donating time, resources, and skills.

Become a Freemason

Becoming a Freemason means you’ll be joining about 175,000 members throughout England and Wales, as well as Districts overseas.

Membership is open to people from all backgrounds and the organisation’s aim is to empower members to be the best they can be – it’s about building character, supporting members as individuals and helping them make a positive contribution to society.

We have more than 7,000 Lodges, with any man over the age of 18 welcome to join, irrespective of their race or religion.
